"A Diamond in the Rough"

In 1970's this kitchen was stripped of it's personality by previous homeowners and fitted with dark, outdated cabinetry, and electric blue formica countertops. Current homeowners Elaine and Carter hired Arciform to "rescue" this space from the sad "remuddling" that occurred some thirty years ago.

This elaborately detailed medium size bungalow is being rebirthed into a stunning example of what once was at the turn of the century. Arciform LLC installed slate tile in the entry and on the mantel in 2000 and had the privilege of designing and remodeling their kitchen in 2002.

Arciform reframed the original kitchen space to accommodate the new layout and appliances and put in a new window, new oak flooring, new electrical and plumbing, and installed stained fir cabinets.

The Mann's are exceptionally tall people so we made the lower cabinets 38" tall instead of 36". We also made the uppers go all the way to the ceiling to make better use of the space as well as lend elegance to the space. A bench seat and a standing bar at the peninsula provide space for entertaining. Cabinets with glass doors and backs are suspended between columns above the peninsula.

Design details include pewter colored "Slate Scape" counters, a slate back splash, and a lower butcher block counter. We installed knobs and pulls that are covered with woven leather and a French apron sink.

The lighting fixtures are kept in the style of the last century. One sconce is mounted on a column and fixtures were suspended form the ceiling over the sink, in the center of the room and at the table in front of the bench seat. Little cans are mounted below the custom built hood to light the stove area.

The remodel of this kitchen made the space more efficient, incorporating all the modern conveniences kitchens of today enjoy while faithfully reflecting the true character of this beautiful home.
